Behind-the-Wheel Course in Virginia for Teens

Royal Driving School's teen behind-the-wheel course is the in-car part of Virginia driver education. Your teen drives one-on-one with a DMV-certified instructor, with free pick-up from home or school anywhere in Northern Virginia, and finishes with the final road skills test. The course is $350.

What Virginia requires

Teens under 18 must complete a state-approved driver education program:

• 36 classroom periods of 50 minutes (usually through school or online)

• 14 in-car periods of 50 minutes: 7 driving and 7 observation, including the final road skills test

• Hold a learner's permit for at least nine months

• 45 hours of supervised practice certified by a parent, with 15 hours after sunset

How our behind-the-wheel course works

Each lesson day

Each day includes 50 minutes of driving and 50 minutes of observation, so your teen learns both by driving and by watching another student.

What your teen practices

Pre-drive checks, steering and braking, turns and lane changes, intersections and right-of-way, parallel parking and backing, highway merging, and defensive driving.

The final road skills test

The course ends with the road skills test given by our instructor, so your teen does not take the road test at the DMV.

What to bring to the first lesson

• A photocopy of a valid Virginia learner's permit

• The required school documentation

• Glasses or contacts if needed

Free pick-up across Northern Virginia

We pick up teens from home or school in Annandale, Fairfax, Springfield, Burke, Alexandria, Arlington, Falls Church, Vienna, McLean and nearby towns, and we schedule around school, sports and weekends.
